August 2016 Block of the Month

It’s time to debut our next block!  I’m excited to show you how to make the Sister’s Choice Block!

Originally designed to be a 10 inch block, I changed the design a little bit in order to work out to a 12 inch block, and make it easy to cut out the pieces.

Download the instructions here.

I’ve also created a step by step slideshow of how to construct the block, that you can see here:

2016 IPS National Exhibition

On Sunday, July 17th, I had the pleasure of attending the Irish Patchwork Society National Exhibition, “Evolution.”

What an amazing exhibition!

Two exhibitions were running in the space when I visited.  One was “Distance,” a collection of quilts from Austria, Latvia and Ireland.

Congratulations to all those who participated.  I hope you had the chance to see the quilts in person, the photographs did not do the exhibition justice!

Congratulations to all of the Southern Branch members who participated as well!

July 2016 Block of the Month

It’s time to debut the next block in our series!

It’s the Tee Block!

IMG_7674

It’s made up of three different units.  A Half Square Triangle unit, a Diamond in a Square unit and Flying Geese units.

What makes this block different, is that the flying geese units are made by using three different fabrics, rather than the traditional two.

In order to help keep you organised, the handout directions include a colouring page to help you make the correct flying geese units and the correct diamond in a square unit.

Download the instructions here.

We’ve also uploaded a video to YouTube to help you learn how to assemble this block.

  • Be sure to bring in any outstanding books back to the library in September.  We’re planning on going through the library over the summer!

After the announcements, we introduced the summer challenge.  This years theme is:

REVOLUTIONARY

What exactly does this mean?  Well, you could take what first sparked our inspiration for the theme, the 100th commemoration of the Easter Rising.  Or, you could take a more literal interpretation and work with circles or curved piecing.  Another idea would be to do something you’ve never done before in patchwork.  You’re welcome to interpret this in any way you choose, and we’re excited to see what you make.

This year’s prize is a sewing machine service to be performed by John O Donnell during our October open meeting.

Next, we debuted the first block of our Block of the Month, the Half Log Cabin:
