Here’s our second video for the Back to Basics series.
In the video below, you’ll see how to thread a Juki 2010-Q sewing machine.
Not sure how to thread yours? Check out your owners manual!
The committee of the Southern Branch of the Irish Patchwork Society has decided to make education a priority for 2016, especially education for beginner patchworkers. This includes not only education at meetings, but also our new video series on YouTube!
Our first video published is entitled “Back to Basics, Parts of a Sewing Machine”
Other videos we’ve completed include “Tools for Patchworking” and “Threading a Sewing Machine.”
Do you have a suggestion for a future video we can add to our list? Just put a comment on our YouTube page or here, and we’ll add it to our growing list!
Well, it’s time for the last block of our Block of the Month Project! It’s been a great year, where we were able to learn new skills!
This month, we tackled foundation paper piecing by making the Wheel of Fortune Block.
This block requires a foundation template which you can download here.
I created a presentation to explain the basics of the block for during our January meeting. Our members enjoyed it so much that there was a request to make a presentation for the web. I created it today and have posted it to YouTube.
Be sure you check out our Pinterest website for inspiration for quilts to make with this block.
Happy New Year from the Southern Branch!
We had our January meeting on the 9th, and had an amazing attendance!
Jane started the meeting with a few announcements.
These included:
We set up a few special tables this meeting as well.
The first was our Back to Basics table:
It was an opportunity for newer patchworkers to get a closer look at some of the tools that can make patchwork easier.
We also had our Swap Your Stash Table:
This will be in our next few meetings, and is an opportunity for you to rejuvenize your scrap stash! Just bring a 3 L bag of scraps. Bring a bag, take a bag. Scraps should be at least 5 inches square.
Erin then made a presentation for the final block of the Block of the Month, the Wheel of Fortune!
We had another amazing Show and Tell this meeting!
Mary brought a quilt that was inspired by the Wild Atlantic Way:
Assumpta shared a quilt she made using a Missouri Star Quilt Company tutorial, the Dresden Sunburst:
Catherina shared one of her first quilts, made with scissors, and hand quilted!
Joanna brought a few quilts to share. Two were quilts for her grandson:
And the last was a Christmas table runner.
Finally, Ailbhe shared two quilts. The first was her first quilt which included pieces of her wedding dress:
and a quilt that she had made for her son:
Then Apple Tree Crafts gave us a demonstration on an easy quilt to make with Half Square Triangles.
Here are a few more shots from our meeting.
We hope to see you at our next meeting on February 13th!
We forgot to let you know that we’ll also be including our awesome Show and Tell in the January meeting.
If you’re feeling so inclined, bring your first quilt to show off! I bet the newer quilters in the group would love to see where everyone started!
Happy New Year!
I do hope the floods have not affected too many of you, although I know from experience how worrying it all is .
To brighten and cheer, our next meeting will be on
At Sacred Heart Church Hall Western Rd CORK
10am start.
We thankfully have an increasing number of new members, and to this end we will be having a table of BACK TO BASICS, to include list of term, samples of sizes of fabric, (fat quarters, long quarters etc) cutters & notions to try out. We realise that some of our members have forgotten more than we will ever know about quilting, but we have to keep this wonderful, addictive, ever changing, skilful hobby alive for the future!
