Back To Basics Series

The committee of the Southern Branch of the Irish Patchwork Society has decided to make education a priority for 2016, especially education for beginner patchworkers.  This includes not only education at meetings, but also our new video series on YouTube!

Our first video published is entitled “Back to Basics, Parts of a Sewing Machine”

Other videos we’ve completed include “Tools for Patchworking” and “Threading a Sewing Machine.”

Do you have a suggestion for a future video we can add to our list?  Just put a comment on our YouTube page or here, and we’ll add it to our growing list!

January Block of the Month

Well, it’s time for the last block of our Block of the Month Project!  It’s been a great year, where we were able to learn new skills!

This month, we tackled foundation paper piecing by making the Wheel of Fortune Block.

This block requires a foundation template which you can download here.

I created a presentation to explain the basics of the block for during our January meeting.  Our members enjoyed it so much that there was a request to make a presentation for the web.  I created it today and have posted it to YouTube.

Be sure you check out our Pinterest website for inspiration for quilts to make with this block.

January Meeting Recap

Happy New Year from the Southern Branch!

We had our January meeting on the 9th, and had an amazing attendance!

Jane started the meeting with a few announcements.

These included:

  • Committee members will be needed in April, the majority of the current committee will have to step down then.
  • The finally tally for the Christmas sale was €1725!
  • Patchwork Plus will be having a sale January 23rd and 24th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

We set up a few special tables this meeting as well.

The first was our Back to Basics table:

It was an opportunity for newer patchworkers to get a closer look at some of the tools that can make patchwork easier.

We also had our Swap Your Stash Table:

This will be in our next few meetings, and is an opportunity for you to rejuvenize your scrap stash!  Just bring a 3 L bag of scraps.  Bring a bag, take a bag.  Scraps should be at least 5 inches square.

Erin then made a presentation for the final block of the Block of the Month, the Wheel of Fortune!

We had another amazing Show and Tell this meeting!

Mary brought a quilt that was inspired by the Wild Atlantic Way:IMG_2325

Assumpta shared a quilt she made using a Missouri Star Quilt Company tutorial, the Dresden Sunburst:

Catherina shared one of her first quilts, made with scissors, and hand quilted!

Joanna brought a few quilts to share.  Two were quilts for her grandson:

And the last was a Christmas table runner.

Finally, Ailbhe shared two quilts.  The first was her first quilt which included pieces of her wedding dress:

and a quilt that she had made for her son:

Then Apple Tree Crafts gave us a demonstration on an easy quilt to make with Half Square Triangles.

Here are a few more shots from our meeting.

January Letter from the Chair

Happy New Year!

I do hope the floods have not affected too many of you, although I know from experience how worrying it all is .

To brighten and cheer, our next meeting will be on

At Sacred Heart Church Hall Western Rd CORK

We thankfully have an increasing number of new members, and to this end we will be having a table of BACK TO BASICS, to include list of term, samples of sizes of fabric, (fat quarters, long quarters etc) cutters & notions to try out. We realise that some of our members have forgotten more than we will ever know about quilting, but we have to keep this wonderful, addictive, ever changing, skilful hobby alive for the future!

Shop. –  Apple Tree Quilts

Talk. –   Sinead from Apple Tree Crafts

BOM   –Erin will again professionally demonstrate this months block. I can only tell you it involves foundation paper piecing.

SWAP YOUR STASH – This is a new idea to kick start the New Year. Simply fill a 3 litre bag( medium sized plastic bag) with the minimum of 1 yard of scraps, no smaller that a 5 inch charm square please.

Put a bag in …. Take a bag home

Tea & coffee  provided but the cakes & goodies depend on your generosity, you have never let us down yet!

Definitely a meeting not to be missed.

Please be prompt.  The hall is hired from 0930 to 1330 and it makes it very difficult for the committee if we run late. If  you have and comments or suggestions, please feel free to speak to a member of the committee.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Best wishes
