May Meeting Recap
Thanks to Susan for writing this recap for me in my absence:
There was a good buzz in the air today. Everyone was in good humour.
Our meeting started with Joanna welcoming everyone in Erin’s absence. We have a new committee and it is hoped that we can find out from members what would be liked in future meetings and that we would talk more about it at June’s meeting.
Joanna thanked Anne Marie of Kilbora Quilts for joining us at our meeting and wished her well in the future after closing her shop.
We were reminded that those wishing to submit a quilt for the National Exhibition should liaise with Joanna who will make sure they are delivered on time.
Other upcoming exhibitions were also announced including one in Bishopstown Library and Spike Island.
Executive news was given by Joanna as she is now the rep for the branch. The national AGM will take place on the 1st October in Kilkenny.
The librarians have asked that all library books out be returned by June’s meeting so that a stock take can take place over the summer break.
Mary Palmer gave a demo on binding with mitred corners and one strip binding. It was very well received.
Anne Marie gave a demo on free motion quilting rulers. It is a new way of doing free motion quilting with the aid of specific rulers and a special foot for the machine. This was very interesting and a lot was learned by us all.

Here’s the Patchwork Bag Presentation!
I found an error in the cutting instructions which I fixed before exporting the slideshow presentation, so you’ll hear the audio of me discovering it, but not see the error. Cutting instructions in the handout are and have been correct.
2015 Block of the Month Quilt
Well, our 2015 Block of the Month project has come to a close!
At our February Meeting, we debuted the finished quilt:
We’ve uploaded all of the directions for each block to our Block of the Month page here.

Here’s a recording of the presentation given at our meeting.
Any suggestions for our next Block of the Month? Please email them to me!
February Meeting Recap
To begin, Happy Valentines Day!
We had a great meeting today! Moya from Patchwork Plus was our shop for the meeting. Jane started off with a few announcements which included a request for members to join the committee in April, as only two members are continuing on.
Mary O’Conner briefly spoke about Quilts for Crumlin, hoping to reintroduce it as a charity our branch can focus on. Quilts for Crumlin gives quilts to seriously ill children aged 0-17in hopes to provide comfort to them during a challenging time. Ms. O’Conner challenges our members to create any sized quilt and show and donate it at our June meeting.
Erin then debuted the Block of the Month Quilt:
It features sashing, diamond cornerstones, and two borders! Watch our blog in the next week for the directions to complete your Block of the Month quilt!
Arlene Shawcross then did her presentation, “Stitch to Enrich” which featured these beautiful works from various artists:
Thank you Arlene for your amazing presentation!
We then had an inspiring show and tell!
Enjoy some snapshots from the meeting:
Our next meeting is March 12, 2016! We hope to see you there!
December Meeting Recap
First, the Southern Branch of the IPS would love to wish you and your family a Happy Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Now, to the recap!
Jane started with a few announcements. These included:
- There will be a need for committee members in April, as over half of the current committee will have to step down.
- Olivia O’Sullivan is now on the national committee, there is a need for a new branch representative to the national committee. Please let Jane know if you’re interested.
- In January we’ll be introducing a beginners table, where members new to quilting can learn the basics. We’re also planning some more YouTube videos to include with this focus!
Erin then did a recap of the past and current block of the month.
This month’s block is the Flying Dutchman!
The Christmas sale that happened on December 3 went very well! It was announced that nearly €1,500 was raised for ACT! Congratulations ladies.
Next, we had our Show and Tell. Here are some of the projects shared by our members:
Then, Moya showed us an easy little-sew project – a Christmas Wreath!
Thank you Moya for your fantastic demonstration!
Next, the Christmas Challenge winner was announced: Sandra Jansen! Our members were given a few circles of fabric, and were challenged to make anything they wanted, as long as they used at least two of the circles of fabric.
Sandra told us she was inspired at our last meeting where Aine Foley from Lismore Quilts demonstrated a table centre.
Here’s a slideshow of all of the entries. Great job everyone!!
Everyone had a fantastic time with the Table Quiz! Thank you Ann for your hard work in creating it!
On a personal note, I’d like to thank everyone at the meeting for being patient with my boys (and the little bit of noise they created). We had a last minute issue with lack of childcare, and I had to bring my toddler twin boys to the meeting. I did my best to keep them occupied and quiet!
See you at our January meeting on January 9, 2016!
June Meeting Recap
Well, we’ve had our last meeting for the summer! I hope everyone had an amazing time at the meeting. Wasn’t Irene MacWilliam’s talk such an inspiration?
We started the meeting announcing the Summer Challenge: Nametags! We’d love to be welcoming to new members and to be able to know everyone’s names!
Be sure to check out our Pinterest page for inspiration for your nametag. Click on the photo to take you to the board.
We also passed out a special “Southern Branch of the Irish Patchwork Society” tag to include on your nametag. If you weren’t able to get to the meeting and would like to participate, please send an email to corkips AT gmail DOT com. From there, Erin will give you an address to send a self addressed stamped envelope so you can be sent a tag.
The Block of the Month was announced as well, the X-Plus Block!
We’ll be continuing this project over the summer, posting the instructions here on the blog. Be on the lookout in the beginning of July and August.
Irene MacWilliam also gave a retrospective on her work, and brought along samples to share. Here’s a slideshow of some of the works she brought along to show:
Our Show and Tell was also inspiring! Just look at all these projects!
Our next meeting will be September 12th, but keep watching the blog. We’ve got a lot of content planned to give you your patchwork fix! Have a great Summer!
May 9th Social Meeting
Well, it was our second to last meeting before the summer break, and we chose to use this meeting more as a social meeting, with an extended show and tell! And what a show and Tell it was!

April Meeting Recap
Today was our April meeting, as well as our AGM. What a meeting!
Our AGM started with our Chair’s report, where Jane recapped the past year, and thanked the members that gave her assistance through the year.
Next, Tracy read the minutes of the previous AGM, and then Eilis gave her treasurer’s report.
At this meeting, it was announced that Eilis would step down as treasurer and Olivia would step down as Branch representative. Volunteers were requested to join the committee this year, as next year 4 members of the committee would be stepping down. See Jane or any other members of the committee if you’re interested in volunteering!
Motions that passed included increasing the fee at the door in order for us to cover room rental fees and a motion to present to the Executive AGM focusing on education for branches.
Once all the business was completed, we had our Show and Tell! How about these quilts!
Next, Sandra Jansen gave a talk on her quilting history and improvisational piecing. Below is a slideshow of her work she showed the group!
Due to the length of the meeting, the Block of the Month instruction was delayed until next month, where we’ll be having a social meeting. Be sure to work on your nearly finished quilts to bring to the Show and Tell. We’re hoping it will be the biggest Show and Tell of the year!
What a turnout at today’s meeting!
What a fantastic turnout we had at today’s meeting.
We started out with announcements and then moved on to Show and Tell. And the show and tell? How inspiring are these quilts?
Well done ladies! Fantastic work!
We then moved on to the Block of the Month project, debuting our Churn Dash block.
Due to the fact that our speaker had the flu, several of our members stepped up and provided demonstrations.
There was a tissue packet demo:
And a Japanese Rice Bag demonstration.
You can find the handout for the rice bag demo here.
Our next meeting is April 11th. It will be our AGM and we’ll have Sandra Jansen speaking about Improvisational Piecing. Start working on your show and tell now!
