See you next month!
Is the Spools block! Designed to look like a spool of thread, this block is easy to construct! You have a ton of choices on how to customise your block. In the block up top, I attempted to make the spool look like it had thread wrapped around it by cutting out the scalloped fabric on the bias.
You could have two spools appear horizontal and two appear vertical.
Or stack the spools on top of one another!
In our second spool block, I used improvisational piecing with several fabrics to make the fabric appear like thread wrapped around the spool. Cut strips of varying widths (making sure it’s at least an inch longer than the 3.5 inch square called for. Sew the strips together, varying the width and angles of the fabrics, and then trim a 3.5 inch square from this improvisational unit.

Apologies for the lateness of the post, I needed to leave the meeting early to catch a ferry for a holiday, and our internet in France was very slow.
On September 12, we met at the Sacred Heart Church on Western Road for the first meeting of the year.
Membership dues for the year were due at this meeting, €40 which goes to the executive board. Due to insurance, you can only attend 2 meetings prior to paying for your membership. After those two meetings, you won’t be covered by insurance anymore!
We’ve also increased our door fees to €4 for members, and €8 for non-members. This increase in fees is a result of a motion passed by members at our AGM in April.
Our meeting started out with announcements from our chair, Jane.
We showed off the eight blocks of the Block of the Month that have been created so far, in two different colorways.
Then, Erin followed with a recap of the Block of the Month project we’ve been doing since February. Then, using the projector, showed a step by step tutorial of this month’s block, the Spools block!
In future meetings we’ll be doing a step by step visual tutorial for the remaining blocks!
Maeve from Limerick Quilt Centre did a demonstration.

Sadly, I had to leave before the Show and Tell portion of the meeting. Please, if you have photos I can use in a slideshow, please send them to our email address, corkips@gmail.com.
Our next meeting is scheduled for October 10 and will be our open meeting!
August has finally arrived!
We’ve been hard at work over the last few weeks preparing the materials for the block for you!
Introducing August’s Block, the Half Rectangle Triangle Star!
You can find the downloadable materials here.
This is our first opportunity to work work templates. IMPORTANT NOTE: A small square has been drawn next to the Half Rectangle Triangle (HRT). When you print out your template, be sure that your square measures 1 inch square! This will ensure your Half Rectangle Triangles will end up the correct size. Be sure to cut the bevels of the template. Cutting the bevels into your half rectangle triangles will make sewing together the triangles easier.
If you’re new to working with Half Rectangle Triangles, do not fear, we’ve created a video tutorial for you!
Be sure to subscribe to our channel to ensure that you’ll be notified of any future uploads.

We’re putting the finishing touches on the directions for July. Be on the lookout for the instructions for these blocks on July 1st!
We’re still trying to catch up on our featured Block of the Month project. Debuted at our May meeting was the Rolling Stone Block!
Utilizing our previously learned skill of strip piecing, we learned the square in a square unit.
Be on the look out in November for the instructions to be posted on our site.

Well, we’ve had our last meeting for the summer! I hope everyone had an amazing time at the meeting. Wasn’t Irene MacWilliam’s talk such an inspiration?
We started the meeting announcing the Summer Challenge: Nametags! We’d love to be welcoming to new members and to be able to know everyone’s names!
Be sure to check out our Pinterest page for inspiration for your nametag. Click on the photo to take you to the board.
We also passed out a special “Southern Branch of the Irish Patchwork Society” tag to include on your nametag. If you weren’t able to get to the meeting and would like to participate, please send an email to corkips AT gmail DOT com. From there, Erin will give you an address to send a self addressed stamped envelope so you can be sent a tag.
The Block of the Month was announced as well, the X-Plus Block!
We’ll be continuing this project over the summer, posting the instructions here on the blog. Be on the lookout in the beginning of July and August.
Irene MacWilliam also gave a retrospective on her work, and brought along samples to share. Here’s a slideshow of some of the works she brought along to show:
Our Show and Tell was also inspiring! Just look at all these projects!
Our next meeting will be September 12th, but keep watching the blog. We’ve got a lot of content planned to give you your patchwork fix! Have a great Summer!
