May 2024 Summary

A warm day with warm friends was had on Saturday when we meet for our monthly meeting.

Lismore quilts brought a wonderful selection of fabric for the pop-up shop. There was a new range of very pretty fat quarters and lots of jellyrolls and layer cakes. There was also some discount fabrics amongst the bolts so something for everyone.

Our own Tracy Wardle of Trace Designs gave a fascinating talk on the origins and history of pockets. How they developed as a separate part of woman’s apparel which were a treasured way of self-expression, not just a utilitarian item. Through to the pocket being incorporated into garments. We also learnt about the different methods of construction and embellishment, The different fabrics used and the variety of shapes and sizes. It made us consider the importance of an often-overlooked part of clothing.

There were also a vivid array of members works displayed during show and tell showing a glimpse of the talent of our members.

Our last meeting before the summer will be on Saturday 8th June where we will be joined by Nikki Foley from The Sewing Shed. The following week (14-16 June),  will see Cork hosting the National AGM at Cork International Airport.

    Ladies,

I joined this group for contacts post my wife Helen’s passing in June 2022…. I be asked about the possibilities of using some of her material to make quilts for charity or family.. in her memory.

I regret she didn’t know you all, before her passing.

I’m in the US to my son and grandkids for May, but I have a notion if you would consider!

I’d love to plan for one of your upcoming meetings, offer material and books free of charge to willing participants who might be willing to use some skills and talents to produce some things that might keep Helen’s memory alive.

I’m in Houston on Friday and will photograph the quilts she made for our grandchildren..

I’m not sure if this is acceptable. I don’t need to sell her material or books but I would love some local work completed in Helen’s memory.

Many thanks for the consideration ..

I’m thinking… a gift stall.. reciprocal… take some material , Books etc. and take more to make a collllective memorial quilt or two or five.. Helen made for others.. I do t have any of her work!

I’m sharing Helen’s passion for quilting. Sharing the books and material freely with fellow quilters. .. rather then them being in an attic or storeroom.

I believe you could make Helen happy the skill she worked in perfecting.. did not pass with her passing. !

I’d be to discuss at the end of May when back from the US and would love Helen to feature in a monthly newsletter.

    Many thanks

    Myles

Look orward to hearing from you on your return,

Hi Myles, sorry this is a bit drawn out but a couple of ladies have said that they would like to get involved in making some charity quilts. I am in the process of trying to organise a group that can meet to share and quilt. Unfortunately I have some other committments that take me out of the country this and next month. But I will get back to you as soon as I can with an update and to try and arrange to collect some fabric. I think it will most likely be November but I’ll stay in touch.
        Best Regards
        Clare

I hope all is well as we head into Autumn..

You mentioned the September meeting and the raising of my request- any update?

Thanks for raising at the October Meeting if it got overlooked.

        my best,

Yes I have spoken to a couple of ladies and I am facilitating a get together to figure out how we can make the quilts. wheather we get together to work or work remotely. Its a small group but I hope it will grow. I would like to meet up with you again and arrange so that I can collect some of Helen’s fabric so I can distribute it to the group and we can get stitching. I am away for a couple of weeks at the begining of November but I hope we can get moving and start as soon as possible.
If you would like to give me a call we can make arrangements. My number is 086 3795764.
