February Meeting Recap

To begin, Happy Valentines Day!

We had a great meeting today!  Moya from Patchwork Plus was our shop for the meeting.  Jane started off with a few announcements which included a request for members to join the committee in April, as only two members are continuing on.

Mary O’Conner briefly spoke about Quilts for Crumlin, hoping to reintroduce it as a charity our branch can focus on.  Quilts for Crumlin gives quilts to seriously ill children aged 0-17in hopes to provide comfort to them during a challenging time.  Ms. O’Conner challenges our members to create any sized quilt and show and donate it at our June meeting.

Erin then debuted the Block of the Month Quilt:

It features sashing, diamond cornerstones, and two borders!  Watch our blog in the next week for the directions to complete your Block of the Month quilt!

Arlene Shawcross then did her presentation, “Stitch to Enrich” which featured these beautiful works from various artists:

Thank you Arlene for your amazing presentation!

We then had an inspiring show and tell!

Background of Ms. Shawcross

Ms. Shawcross has exhibited widely in Ireland and in the U.K.  She was awarded the Mairin O’Brien Flegg Memorial Award for contemporary embroidery from the RDS in 2011.  She is a member of the Cork Textile network, Society of Designer Craftsmen in the U.K., the Textile Society and the Irish Patchwork Society.

She states “I work mostly using the technique of free-machine embroidery often stitching onto a soluble background which is later dissolved away to create a lace-like effect, or I combine my stitching with my own hand-dyed silks and velvets.  I create individual wall pieces, garments and accessories.  I teach workshops in free-machine embroidery and related textile techniques and enjoy working to commission.”
