January Block of the Month

Well, it’s time for the last block of our Block of the Month Project!  It’s been a great year, where we were able to learn new skills!

This month, we tackled foundation paper piecing by making the Wheel of Fortune Block.

This block requires a foundation template which you can download here.

I created a presentation to explain the basics of the block for during our January meeting.  Our members enjoyed it so much that there was a request to make a presentation for the web.  I created it today and have posted it to YouTube.

Be sure you check out our Pinterest website for inspiration for quilts to make with this block.

January Meeting Recap

Happy New Year from the Southern Branch!

We had our January meeting on the 9th, and had an amazing attendance!

Jane started the meeting with a few announcements.

These included:

  • Committee members will be needed in April, the majority of the current committee will have to step down then.
  • The finally tally for the Christmas sale was €1725!
  • Patchwork Plus will be having a sale January 23rd and 24th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

We set up a few special tables this meeting as well.

The first was our Back to Basics table:

It was an opportunity for newer patchworkers to get a closer look at some of the tools that can make patchwork easier.

We also had our Swap Your Stash Table:

This will be in our next few meetings, and is an opportunity for you to rejuvenize your scrap stash!  Just bring a 3 L bag of scraps.  Bring a bag, take a bag.  Scraps should be at least 5 inches square.

Erin then made a presentation for the final block of the Block of the Month, the Wheel of Fortune!

November Meeting Recap

Though our meeting was smaller than usual, my was it mighty!!

Our shop was Lismore Quilt Company.  It was their first visit to our meeting!

Jane started the meeting with some announcements.  She attended the national AGM in Galway where a new committee was elected, and the motion to start a young people’s IPS was unanimously passed.  We’re excited to see what happens!

September Block of the Month

IMG_5589

Is the Spools block!  Designed to look like a spool of thread, this block is easy to construct! You have a ton of choices on how to customise your block.  In the block up top, I attempted to make the spool look like it had thread wrapped around it by cutting out the scalloped fabric on the bias.

IMG_5587

You could have two spools appear horizontal and two appear vertical.

IMG_5588

Or stack the spools on top of one another!

IMG_5899

In our second spool block, I used improvisational piecing with several fabrics to make the fabric appear like thread wrapped around the spool.  Cut strips of varying widths (making sure it’s at least an inch longer than the 3.5 inch square called for.  Sew the strips together, varying the width and angles of the fabrics, and then trim a 3.5 inch square from this improvisational unit.

Be sure to check out our Pinterest board for inspiration!

September Meeting Recap

Apologies for the lateness of the post, I needed to leave the meeting early to catch a ferry for a holiday, and our internet in France was very slow.

On September 12, we met at the Sacred Heart Church on Western Road for the first meeting of the year.

IMG_1526

Membership dues for the year were due at this meeting, €40 which goes to the executive board.  Due to insurance, you can only attend 2 meetings prior to paying for your membership.  After those two meetings, you won’t be covered by insurance anymore!

We’ve also increased our door fees to €4 for members, and €8 for non-members.  This increase in fees is a result of a motion passed by members at our AGM in April.

Our meeting started out with announcements from our chair, Jane.

IMG_1534

We showed off the eight blocks of the Block of the Month that have been created so far, in two different colorways.

IMG_1539

Then, Erin followed with a recap of the Block of the Month project we’ve been doing since February.  Then, using the projector, showed a step by step tutorial of this month’s block, the Spools block!

IMG_5589

In future meetings we’ll be doing a step by step visual tutorial for the remaining blocks!

Maeve from Limerick Quilt Centre did a demonstration.
