To begin, Happy Valentines Day!

We had a great meeting today!  Moya from Patchwork Plus was our shop for the meeting.  Jane started off with a few announcements which included a request for members to join the committee in April, as only two members are continuing on.

Mary O’Conner briefly spoke about Quilts for Crumlin, hoping to reintroduce it as a charity our branch can focus on.  Quilts for Crumlin gives quilts to seriously ill children aged 0-17in hopes to provide comfort to them during a challenging time.  Ms. O’Conner challenges our members to create any sized quilt and show and donate it at our June meeting.

Erin then debuted the Block of the Month Quilt:

IRISH QUILT AND DESIGN

MARINER’S COMPASS

Saturday & Sunday, 27th & 28th February 2016

In this two-day workshop we will learn to draft, and make, Mariner’s Compass Blocks. We will also look at various types of Compass blocks, and at some of the design issues of putting them in a quilt.

This block looks complex, but just like the Feathered Star from January, it’s all about breaking it down into straightforward and do-able steps.  By going through the drafting you get a better understanding of the block, this makes it easier to develop your colour placement for the compass you want.

Learn how to get the sharp points sharp, and the curves nice and smooth.  We brake down the construction into nice easy steps.  See how to keep track of colours and placements, so that even if you are interrupted, or have to put it away, you don’t loose track of where everything goes.

We will also look at a number of methods for setting your Compass into a square block – two methods of setting into a circle, or how to piece it into a background.

As usual, we gather at 9.30 for coffee and ‘something nice’ for class to start at 10.00. We take a break at 1.00 for Emer’s famous lunches, in the dinning room.  And class finishes at 5.00, but the studio is available in the evenings and early mornings for anyone who wants to ‘sew on’!

Price: 2 day workshops, lunches and snacks €190

Bring List: You will receive a bring list on booking, anything specialised will be provided.

Questions: Contact Emer Fahy at emerfahy.quilts@gmail.com

Accommodation: There is some accommodation at the studio (on a first come, first served basis) and there is lots of accommodation nearby – happy to give recommendations.Quilters coming by bus/train/air: kits and equipment will be made available, please arrange at booking.

Time for another IPS meeting!

Hope you have all had a productive month.

I think with all the workshops, sales, and groups which meet regularly, we all have a chance to sew every day.

I find as much as the learning, I enjoy the company and chat of any meeting I have with patchworking friends, so for all our new members, do take up any opportunities to go anywhere to sew, they really are great people.

Back To Basics Series

The committee of the Southern Branch of the Irish Patchwork Society has decided to make education a priority for 2016, especially education for beginner patchworkers.  This includes not only education at meetings, but also our new video series on YouTube!

Our first video published is entitled “Back to Basics, Parts of a Sewing Machine”

Other videos we’ve completed include “Tools for Patchworking” and “Threading a Sewing Machine.”

Do you have a suggestion for a future video we can add to our list?  Just put a comment on our YouTube page or here, and we’ll add it to our growing list!

January Block of the Month

Well, it’s time for the last block of our Block of the Month Project!  It’s been a great year, where we were able to learn new skills!

This month, we tackled foundation paper piecing by making the Wheel of Fortune Block.

This block requires a foundation template which you can download here.

I created a presentation to explain the basics of the block for during our January meeting.  Our members enjoyed it so much that there was a request to make a presentation for the web.  I created it today and have posted it to YouTube.

Be sure you check out our Pinterest website for inspiration for quilts to make with this block.

It was an opportunity for newer patchworkers to get a closer look at some of the tools that can make patchwork easier.

We also had our Swap Your Stash Table:
